Combining broad technical experience and a history of team leadership, Tom Nugent coordinates groups and experts to exchange information and identify requirements, so that all aspects of the team’s work are optimized for both technical and business objectives.
Tom was a project scientist at Intellectual Ventures Labs, working on a variety of projects including the “Photonic Fence,” a system for shooting down mosquitoes via laser. Prior to co-founding LaserMotive with Dr. Kare, Tom served as Research Director for LiftPort Inc. – the space elevator companies, and one of the pioneers in the development of the modern space elevator concept. While at LiftPort, he led the research team that outlined a realistic path to space elevator development, as well as working on a variety of milestone tests of robotic lifters. Tom’s other space development work includes liquid-fueled rocket engine development through the MIT Rocket Team, and advanced fusion propulsion research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Tom has led volunteer groups throughout his adult life, starting with a National Space Society chapter in college (which won membership recruitment awards under Tom’s leadership).
Tom holds a B.S. in Physics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
