Power over Fiber
LaserMotive’s Power over Fiber (PoF) technology delivers electrical power by sending laser light through lightweight, non-conductive fiber optic cable to a remote photovoltaic receiver. Sending power via PoF has many advantages over using copper wires in a variety of applications, including:
- Underwater robots and sensors
- High voltage environments (research labs, power substations)
- Strong magnetic field environments (MRI machines, research labs)
- Commercial aircraft
- Tethered VTOL aircraft
In most cases, PoF can be safer, lighter, and immune to RFI and EMI issues, compared to copper wires. This brief paper compares optical fiber vs copper wires for flying, tethered aircraft.
